Murder suspect, 69, arrested in Antipolo after decade on the run

A 69-year-old man accused of murder and listed as the most wanted person in the Calabarzon Region was arrested Thursday morning in Antipolo City, more than a decade after the crime.
The suspect, identified only as alias Joel, a former soldier, was nabbed in a joint operation led by the CIDG Rizal Provincial Field Unit, Antipolo City Police Station warrant team, and the 404th AMC RMFB 4A. He was apprehended around 10:15 AM in Barangay San Jose.
Joel was arrested on the strength of a warrant issued by a regional trial court in Antipolo for the crime of murder. No bail was recommended.
Investigators said the incident dates back to December 2013, when Joel allegedly shot and hacked to death a drinking companion, resulting in the victim’s immediate death. A year later, the court issued arrest warrants for both Joel and his son, who was also suspected of involvement in the killing.
Since then, the elder Joel had evaded arrest by moving frequently to avoid detection. His run finally ended this week after over 10 years of hiding.
He is now detained at the CIDG-Rizal custodial facility pending further legal proceedings.
