The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday said it is prepared to assist in the investigation of reported quarrying activities in coastal areas linked to reclamation efforts in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

In a statement, AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla stressed that the military remains vigilant on issues affecting national security, including the alleged quarrying.

Padilla said the AFP is prepared to provide any assistance and coordinate with relevant government bodies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) "to identify individuals or groups involved in such activities."

“Under the whole-of-nation approach, it is within the AFP’s mandate to protect the integrity of our national territory and prevent any actions that could pose a threat to our sovereignty, environment, and security,” she added.

The military spokesperson also stressed the AFP will continue to monitor developments in the WPS.

The Palace earlier said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered an investigation into the reported quarrying activities in coastal areas.

This directive follows reports from the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) indicating that sand from the Philippines’ coastal areas is being used for foreign reclamation projects in the WPS.

Marcos warned that those found responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
