As the storied University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) careers of National University (NU) seniors near their final chapters, one Lady Bulldog is quietly preparing to write the next.

Vange Alinsug, a 22-year-old wing spiker, is steadily emerging as a cornerstone of NU’s women’s volleyball program.

With the likes of Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Erin Pangilinan and Sheena Toring set to bid farewell at the end of Season 87, Alinsug is embracing both the moment and the responsibility that comes with it.

Off the court, Alinsug is known for her playful and humorous demeanor. But behind the jokes and smiles is a student of the game, one who is carefully absorbing the lessons taught by her senior teammates before they leave the collegiate stage for good.

Among the many lessons she has picked up, one stands out above the rest — bravery.

That trait was on full display Saturday, when the Lady Bulldogs staged a stunning comeback to eliminate Far Eastern University in the Final Four.

Down two sets, NU clawed its way back to win in five thrilling sets, 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 17-15, with Alinsug playing a key role.

“For me, it’s really about being relentless — never stopping and never giving up until we win,” Alinsug said.

“That’s something we’ve all adapted from one another and continue to work hard for in every training session.”

Alinsug knows what’s at stake once her veteran teammates leave. Their departure marks the end of an era that began with their dominance as the Lady Bullpups in high school and extended into a golden run in the collegiate division.

Still, she refuses to see it as a closing chapter.

“This (run to the finals) is a big help for me, especially since it’s my last chance to play alongside ate Bels (Belen),” Alinsug shared.

“I’ve learned a lot from them, especially how to be courageous on the court.”

For Alinsug, this isn’t just a handover. It’s a promise — that the fire lit by NU’s seniors won’t burn out any time soon.
