Broadway icon Lea Salonga and her son, Nic Chien, recently shared their heartfelt journey in an exclusive feature by PEOPLE magazine, highlighting their family’s unwavering love and support.
Nic, a proud transgender man, reflected on his transition and the pivotal role his parents played in helping him embrace his true identity. He recalled coming out as part of the LGBTQIA+ community at 14, describing the experience as both challenging and fortunate.
“She didn’t want my life to be as hard as it could be. This was the most ideal situation for me… It was rough,” Nic told PEOPLE, expressing gratitude for the understanding and acceptance he received from his family.
For Lea, raising a child means providing the support they need to grow into their authentic selves. She emphasized her commitment to ensuring Nic’s success and well-being.
“I’ve learned how to raise a child who is their own being. Of course, there are expectations. I’m glad this kid can cook, do his own laundry, and doesn’t forget to feed the cat,” she shared.
“But the one thing I’ve learned is that you have to raise your child the way they need to be raised,” she added.
“As a parent, I want to set my child up for success. I want my child to feel safe, strong, and ready to conquer the world on their own terms,” she said.
Nic admitted that, at times, he has struggled with feelings of isolation, but his parents' unwavering support has made all the difference.
“Sometimes I feel alone, but I’m not… It does really help to have people in your corner,” he said.
Beyond their personal journey, Lea and Nic will soon share the stage in Into The Woods, which will be staged in the Philippines from 7 to 24 August. Nic will play Jack, while Lea will take on the role of The Witch in this highly anticipated production by Theater Group Asia.
