The Bureau of Immigration (BI) confirmed the re-arrest of South Korean fugitive Na Ikhyeon, who was apprehended in Angeles City, Pampanga on Sunday — five days after his escape from detention.
Na was captured in a joint operation conducted by the BI Fugitive Search Unit and Intelligence Division, in coordination with local police forces and intelligence agencies. He was found hiding in a residential area in Brgy. Pampang, Angeles City.
Authorities also arrested Kang Changbeom, who allegedly helped Na escape. CCTV footage and intelligence reports confirmed Kang's involvement. Further verification with the Korean National Police Agency revealed that Kang is also a wanted fugitive in South Korea for fraud.
Both fugitives will be transferred to the BI detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, under heightened security. Officials have classified them as high-risk detainees due to their escape attempt.
The BI also provided updates on the three employees involved in Na’s escape. Two contractual workers were immediately terminated, while a permanent employee’s case was escalated to the Department of Justice (DOJ). On Friday, DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla confirmed the dismissal of the third employee.
