In honor of National Autism Consciousness Week, SM Cares, SM Cinema, Autism Society Philippines, and GMA Pictures teamed up for a successful sensory-friendly screening of the award-winning film Firefly recently.
More than 2,000 participants, including children on the autism spectrum and their families, gathered at 10 SM malls to enjoy an inclusive and heartwarming movie experience.
“Every time we visit SM malls, we truly feel the acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation. It’s the norm here,” said Autism Society Philippines chair Emerita Dang Uy Koe.
The Lights Up, Sounds Down event wasn’t just about entertainment — it was designed to cater to the unique needs of attendees on the autism spectrum.
With adjustments to lighting and sound, as well as a relaxed atmosphere that allowed for movement and vocalizations, the screening ensured everyone could enjoy the movie at their own pace.
“At SM Supermalls, we believe it’s our responsibility to create spaces where everyone feels valued, respected, and included. It’s a way of life here,” said SM Cares program director for Disability Affairs Engr. Bien Mateo.
The event received rave reviews from families, who expressed gratitude for the inclusive environment that provided both joy and comfort.
It was a powerful reminder of how important it is to meet the needs of the autism community.
SM continues its commitment to inclusivity by investing in training programs for employees to better support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
SM Cinema also prioritizes accessibility in its theaters, ensuring a welcoming environment for all.
SM Cares, the CSR arm of SM Prime Holdings, runs various programs that support communities, promote social inclusion, and care for the environment.
In addition to its advocacy for Persons with Disabilities, it also focuses on initiatives for the environment, women and breastfeeding mothers, children and youth, senior citizens and bike-friendly projects.
