The Visayas Container Terminal (VCT), operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Iloilo, marked a significant milestone in regional trade and port operations by welcoming the first gearless vessel to dock in the Western Visayas Region.
The MV Otana Bhum, operated by Regional Container Lines (RCL), made its inaugural call on 9 January 2025, symbolizing enhanced connectivity and trade opportunities for the Visayas.
This development comes as part of ICTSI’s continued investments in VCT, including the delivery of two state-of-the-art mobile harbor cranes (MHCs) in September 2024. These cranes, designed to meet modern shipping demands, enable the terminal to accommodate larger gearless vessels, reflecting its modernization efforts.
The MV Otana Bhum, measuring 147 meters in length and with a capacity of 1,022 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), operates under RCL’s Singapore-Philippines 6 (RSP6) service. This route connects Singapore with Iloilo, Zamboanga, Cebu, and Tagoloan, enhancing trade links across regional and global markets.
“The arrival of RCL’s Otana Bhum not only highlights our port’s world-class capabilities but also demonstrates our commitment to fostering economic growth in the region. This development positions Iloilo as a key player in the Visayas, offering enhanced connectivity and efficient services for shipping lines and stakeholders,” said John Largo, VICT Chief Executive Officer.
Strategically located in Central Philippines, VCT features upgraded infrastructure supported by an extensive regional road network. These enhancements not only strengthen local trade but also facilitate the export of key agricultural and fisheries products from Western Visayas to international markets.
The vessel’s arrival signals a step forward for the region, paving the way for expanded trade opportunities, more efficient port operations, and strengthened global connectivity. By reducing reliance on transshipment ports, VCT is positioning itself as a key international gateway for Western Visayas.
