Dermatologists on Monday warned the public that IV Glutathione is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for skin whitening.
In a media forum, Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) president Dr. Jasmin Jamora stressed the dangers of unregulated IV Glutathione for skin whitening as it may pose serious side effects.
Jamora explained that dermalinfusion is not just “vitamins or supplements” but drugs or medicines.
“This is a medical procedure that should be performed by a licensed doctor or nurse under the direct supervision of a doctor,” she added, noting that these procedures should be done in medical clinics with doctors onsite.
The health expert said there are no published clinical trials or evidence that show the efficiency of the use of injectable glutathione for skin lightening.
The PDS made the warning after a Filipino woman posted her experience with the use of IV Glutathione as a beauty procedure.
In the video, the woman could not open her right eye and she is asking for prayers so that she doesn’t lose her eyesight.
Several health and beauty salons, wellness spas and beauty clinics are offering intravenous drip or infusion using skin-lightening agents including reduced glutathione, vitamin C and other injections.
To date, the FDA has not approved any injectable products for skin lightening.
