The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded five ash emission events from Kanlaon Volcano on Sunday.
The ash emissions occurred between 5:40 a.m. and 6:07 a.m., and again from 9:42 a.m. to 10:28 a.m., producing a grayish volcanic plume that rose 200 to 750 meters from the volcano’s summit. This activity led to light ashfall in the towns of La Castellana and La Carlota in Negros Occidental.
In addition to the ash emissions, the volcanic activity continues as the ash is carried westward and southwestward. Phivolcs has warned residents in the areas of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental to remain alert for possible further ashfall events.
From midnight on 25 January to 26 January, a total of 35 volcanic earthquakes and 11 volcanic tremors were recorded, with tremors lasting between 4 and 38 minutes. Volcanic earthquakes are isolated events caused by the movement of magma beneath the surface, while volcanic tremors are continuous vibrations typically linked to ongoing volcanic activity.
The volcano also emitted at least 2,413 tons of sulfur dioxide, slightly lower than the 3,028 tons recorded on Friday, 24 January.
Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating that a high level of volcanic unrest continues to be observed.
