Inspired by books he read as a child, Jeffrey Nacional dreamed of becoming an electrical engineer. As, he is in fourth year of the course at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Nacional is steadily realizing his goal. His journey has been made smoother through the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship for Excellence (GBF STEM SFE).

Although studying in a state university does not require him to pay tuition, Nacional relies on the scholarship to cover laboratory fees, dorm rent and daily expenses. The financial support also allows him to help his mother and father, who works in Saudi Arabia.

Despite his dedication in pursuing his dream, Nacional knows that more challenges lie ahead.

“My dream right now is to finish my studies. After that, take the board exam, then find a job to truly help my parents,” he tells the DAILY TRIBUNE.

GBF STEM SFE scholars like Nacional receive annual financial assistance of P80,000 to P120,000.

Beyond financial aid, the program offers capacity-building opportunities, such as upskilling initiatives, internships within the Gokongwei Group, and potential job placements after graduation.

Last 9 January, GBF solidified its commitment to advancing STEM education by extending its partnership with the Department of Education. A memorandum of agreement was signed expanding collaboration, with GBF pledging to continue providing scholarships, educational technology, teacher training and other forms of support to nurture the next generation of Filipino innovators.

For scholars like Nacional, the foundation’s support is not just about the money, but about hope, bringing dreams within reach and giving young Filipinos a chance to foster a brighter future for themselves and their families.
