Nobody thought that a chance meeting of artist-philanthropist Roxanne Quimby and beekeeper Burt Shavitz in the ‘80s would mark the birth of Burt’s Bees, one of today’s sought-after personal care brands.

In 1984, after a summer of apprenticeship, Quimby suggested that the honey be packaged in small containers so it could be sold at craft fairs. She later learned how to make candles from Shavitz’s stashes of leftover beeswax. A New York City boutique then started selling the candles in the late ’80s. It was then that Quimby and Shavitz introduced a skincare line, including the now famous Burt’s Bees beeswax lip balm. As they say, the rest is history.

“We take from nature, so we must respect and preserve it,” Quimby said.

Burt’s Bees products are over 95 percent natural origin, without phthalates, parabens, petrolatum, or sodium lauryl sulfate. Their packaging is recyclable, and they are powered by facilities with renewable electricity.
