The Senate, through Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, recognized the enduring contributions of the late Senator Santanina Rasul, a trailblazer in Philippine history and a staunch advocate for education, peacebuilding, and marginalized communities.

During the Senate session on Tuesday, 3 December, Go co-sponsored a measure paying tribute to Rasul's legacy, highlighting her groundbreaking role as the first Muslim woman elected to the Senate.

“Senator Rasul was a remarkable figure in our nation's history. Her groundbreaking contributions to legislation and her unwavering commitment to the promotion of peace, education, and the empowerment of women and marginalized communities have left an indelible mark on our society. Hindi po matatawaran ang husay, dedikasyon at pusong naipamalas niya sa serbisyo,” Go remarked.

Rasul's career was dedicated to empowering women, children, and underserved communities. Go spotlighted her achievements, particularly her founding of the Magbassa Kita Foundation Inc. in 1966, which has been pivotal in advancing literacy and fostering peace among marginalized groups.

“She held several positions in government, representing Muslims and cultural minorities throughout her public service career. In 1986, she served as a commissioner for Muslim and other ethnic minorities and was a board member at the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports,” Go added.

Education, as Rasul believed, was key to breaking the cycle of poverty and achieving sustainable development. Her unwavering advocacy for access to quality education and literacy programs continues to inspire generations.

“Throughout her distinguished career, Senator Rasul championed causes that uplifted women, children, and underserved communities,” Go said. “Her dedication to advancing literacy and ensuring access to education remains a shining example of public service.”

In his speech, Go also expressed condolences to Rasul’s family and paid tribute to her enduring legacy.

“Mr. President, ilan lamang po ito sa mga mahahalagang kontribusyon na nagawa ni Senator Rasul. May her soul find everlasting peace. And I offer my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones,” he concluded.
