A religious ceremony was organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Philippines to commemorate the late Foreign Minister (FM) of Sri Lanka, Lakshman Kadirgamar.
The event was held on 20 November 2024, at Wisdom Park and coincided with the visit of Ms. Suganthie Kadirgamar, the spouse of the late FM, to the Philippines. Ambassador Dr. Chanaka Talpahewa, embassy staff, members of the Sri Lankan community, and well-wishers participated in the ceremony.
The visitors were welcomed by officials of Wisdom Park: Dr. Mariano Yupitun, Founder; Mr. Harish Dilhan Athauda, President; and Ms. Corrine Adiaton, Vice President for Operations. Dr. Yupitun remembered the late Minister as a "great person" who had done much for the country (Sri Lanka) and Buddhism. Special mention was made of the late Minister's efforts in spearheading the campaign to declare Vesak a United Nations holiday. Dr. Yupitun also presented Ms. Kadirgamar with a first-day cover of the Vesak Day stamp issued by the Government of the Philippines.
The bodhi pooja and circumambulation were performed on the bo sapling from Sri Maha Bodi in Anuradhapura, planted at Wisdom Park, which has now grown into a bo tree. This was followed by a Buddha pooja and an alms giving to the Maha Sanga, prepared by the embassy staff. Religious observances were conducted by (Lama) Shifu Yuemin.
