CAMP LAPULAPU, Cebu City — In a memorable ceremony, the Visayas Command confers an achievement medal to a K9 who played a major role in the security and stability operation that led to the recent series of encounters in Negros Occidental between the combined troops of 47th Infantry Battalion and 15th Infantry Battalion against the remnants of the NPA’s Southwestern Front from 21-24 November.

Aspin Tracking Dog “Itum” was conferred with the Military Working Dog Achievement Medal for exemplary performance of duty during the conduct of pursuit operation that led to the discovery of an NPA cadaver and the recovery of one Cal. 45 pistol along with several other war materiel on 21 November at Barangay Gatuslao, Candoni, Negros Occidental.

Lieutenant General Fernando M. Reyeg PA, the commander of (Viscom), who led the ceremony expressed that, “Today, we not only honor our brave soldiers but also recognize the invaluable contributions of our K9 partners. Itum’s exceptional performance exemplifies the critical role that our K9 partners play in ensuring mission success.”

“Itum’s significant contribution underscores the importance of integrating specialized capabilities in military operations. Itum’s keen senses and determination were instrumental in tracking down the withdrawing NPA terrorists, leading to another breakthrough in the operation,” Lt. Gen. Reyeg added.

The operation, which resulted in the neutralization of eight NPA terrorists and the recovery of several war materiel including eight high-powered firearms, underscored the effectiveness of both human and canine collaboration in combat scenarios.

Likewise, 14 personnel from both the 47th Infantry Battalion and the 15th Infantry Battalion were also recognized for their heroism during the event. One officer and three enlisted personnel received Gold Cross Medals; one officer and three Enlisted Personnel were awarded with Silver Cross Medals; and two officers and four enlisted personnel were honored with Military Merit Medals. These awards celebrated the soldiers’ unwavering commitment to peace and security in the Visayas region.

The awarding ceremony highlighted the diverse capability within the ranks of Viscom, from the soldiers on the ground to the loyal and dedicated canines like Itum. “In Team Viscom, every member of our fighting force is an integral part of the organization. It is imperative to recognize and honor every member’s untiring effort and selfless sacrifice to ensure that peace will reign, and the democratic way of life is sustained throughout the Visayas region,” Reyeg concluded.
