Driven by a shared concern over the assertive actions of China in the South China Sea and the ever-present threat from North Korea, this deepening partnership has the potential to bolster regional stability, but also carries significant considerations that must be addressed.

Historically, the Philippines and South Korea have enjoyed a cordial relationship, marked by economic and diplomatic cooperation. However, this recent development signifies a strategic shift towards a more robust military partnership. Several key factors fuel this evolution.

Firstly, China’s increasingly aggressive posture in the South China Sea is a cause for alarm for both nations. These actions, including the militarization of disputed islands and disregard for international law, pose a direct threat to Philippine sovereignty and disrupt crucial maritime trade routes for South Korea.
