Known as the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture, the late Napoleon “Billy” Abueva veered away from classicism and ventured into modernism, a movement that led to a very crucial period in Philippine artistry. In 1976, at the age of 46, he was proclaimed as the National Artist of the Philippines for visual arts (sculpture). He led a very fruitful life and had a career that spanned over six decades filled with both local and international recognitions and cultural missions. Early this year, the notable sculptor bid the art world goodbye at 88 years old. To honor the legacy of the late National Artist of the Philippines for visual arts, the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde will unveil one of his masterpieces entitled The Lover’s Duyan on Wednesday, July 4, 4 p.m. at the lobby of the School of Design and Arts (SDA) Campus, where it will be permanently installed. The SDA Campus is located at 950 Pablo Ocampo (Vito Cruz) Street, Malate, Manila.
