Two-time Olympian Elreen Ando and Kristel Macrohon look to close the Philippines’ campaign on a high note when they compete in the women’s 61kg event of the IWF World Weightlifting Championships on Sunday in Ningbo, China.

The competition starts at 7 p.m. (Manila time), with both Filipinas aiming to add to the medal haul of the national lifters.

Rose Jean Ramos opened the Philippines’ tally with a bronze in the women’s 49kg snatch, while Rosegie Ramos followed with another bronze in the 53kg snatch.

Albert Ian delos Santos, who took the bronze in the Asian Games in Nagoya, last month, narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth in the men’s 70kg event last Friday.

The 20-year-old, however, set two junior world records with his 187kg clean-and-jerk and 331kg total.

Ando will seek a podium finish while also making a strong start to her bid for a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with the world championships serving as part of the qualifying period.

She hopes to improve on her fifth-place finish in Nagoya, Japan, last September, where she recorded a 224kg total.

The task will be difficult, with Asian Games champion Yang Liuyue of China and Paris Olympics silver medalist Maude Charron of Canada among the leading contenders.

Asian Games silver medalist Pak Jin Hae of North Korea and bronze medalist Kuo Hsing Chun of Chinese Taipei also loom as major challengers for Ando and Macrohon.
