Senator Christopher “Bong” Go joined Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte recently in inaugurating a community-based rehabilitation center for stroke patients in Barangay Tibungco, expanding access to recovery services closer to patients’ homes.

The ceremony coincided with the blessing and turnover of the nearby Tibungco Super Health Center, which provides primary healthcare services to residents.

Go, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, said the rehabilitation facility would allow stroke survivors to receive checkups and therapy in their community instead of traveling to hospitals.

Stroke can affect mobility, coordination and speech, often requiring prolonged rehabilitation and support from family members and caregivers.

Go cited Republic Act 11959, or the Regional Specialty Centers Act, which he principally authored and sponsored.

The law mandates specialty centers in Department of Health hospitals nationwide to make advanced medical services more accessible and affordable, including cardiovascular care, brain and spine care, and physical rehabilitation.

In Davao City, the Southern Philippines Medical Center provides specialized cardiovascular services and other medical care.

Go has also supported the development of cardiac catheterization facilities at the hospital to strengthen its capacity to perform advanced cardiovascular and vascular procedures.

The Tibungco Super Health Center is part of efforts to bring consultations, diagnostic services and preventive healthcare closer to communities.

Go stressed the importance of cooperation among the Department of Health, local governments, medical professionals and other stakeholders to ensure healthcare facilities are properly equipped and staffed.

He also recognized the Davao City government, local officials and health personnel for supporting the expansion of community healthcare services.

The senator said he would continue backing initiatives that improve access to medical treatment and rehabilitation, particularly for patients requiring long-term care.
