Across China’s bustling metropolitan centers, ancient water towns and historic imperial palaces, a distinct phenomenon has transformed the landscape of Chinese tourism and youth culture: the commercial photoshoot boom. What once was an occasional luxury reserved for milestone events like weddings has evolved into an accessible, everyday form of self-expression, identity play and social media currency.
Driven by platforms like Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) and Douyin, China’s commercial photography ecosystem offers fully curated, immersive transformations. From tourists donning traditional Hanfu among historic ruins to young urbanites hiring accompanying freelance photographers, the craze highlights a broader shift toward emotional consumption and aesthetic storytelling.
Cultural nostalgia and Hanfu renaissance
One of the most prominent pillars of China’s photoshoot market is the resurgence of traditional Chinese aesthetics. Known as Guochao (national tide), this movement manifests heavily in imperial costume and Hanfu photoshoots. Tourist hotspots like Dunhuang, Xi’an, and Fenghuang have largely transformed into living backdrops. Local studios offer all-inclusive packages containing elaborate hair styling, period-accurate makeup, historical garments, and lighting crews. Visitors do not merely view history; they act as its central characters. Beyond imperial courts, themes inspired by Dunhuang apsaras (feitian), ethnic minority garments (such as Tibetan or Miao attire), and wuxia fantasy series dominate studio catalogs.
Micro-lifestyle photography & ‘accompanying photographers’
The traditional, high-pressure studio environment is increasingly competing with lightweight, informal photography formats. Known as peipai (accompanying photographers), this industry pairs freelance photographers — often fellow young adults or university students — with solo travelers or groups. Rooted in China’s trend of finding low-commitment companions for specific activities (dazi), clients hire peipai through Xiaohongshu to serve as a hybrid tour buddy, hype-person, and photographer. These casual shoots focus on candid lifestyle shots rather than overly posed images.
Identity play and escapism
For many young adults navigating competitive workplace dynamics and urban stress, commercial photoshoots offer a form of therapeutic escapism. Studios frequently market specialized themes ranging from K-pop idol makeovers and vintage 1990s retro aesthetics to ethereal woodland nymphs and anime-inspired transformations. Rather than waiting for wedding days or graduation ceremonies, young consumers view photo sessions as a form of self-reward and identity documentation, capturing their youth on their own terms.
Commercialization of life milestones
While casual and travel photography thrive, the foundational market for pre-wedding and milestone photography remains an industry behemoth. Pre-wedding photo shoots in China are multi-look productions involving set construction, travel to dedicated photographic European-style “towns” (such as Thames Town in Shanghai), or destination shoots across Europe and Southeast Asia. The market has also expanded to include “golden anniversary” shoots for senior citizens and elaborate studio setups for family portraits, extending commercialized aesthetic production to every stage of life.
