Despite finishing with only a single medal in the 20th Asian Games, the national weightlifting team remains focused on its goal of emerging victorious in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella told DAILY TRIBUNE that the national team remains on track for its Olympic bid, with various qualifying events set to begin next month.
Albert Ian delos Santos delivered the country’s lone medal after securing the bronze in the men’s 70kg category with a total lift of 324kg in his Asian Games debut.
Rosegie Ramos came closest to adding another podium finish but fell short as she finished fourth in the women’s 55kg category with a 203kg total.
“As I’ve said, the goal is the LA Olympics. We are still on track but we’ll do more international events now for the new and young ones,” Puentevella said in an online conversation.
“Olympic qualifying events will start next month. Then, there’s another one in December.”
The IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo, China, from 27 October to 8 November will serve as the first Olympic qualifying event for the Summer Games.
Eight weightlifters with the highest total lift in each weight category will earn qualification, with each national Olympic committee allowed to send a maximum of three men and three women competitors.
China and North Korea are expected to provide stiff competition, but Puentevella believes the Philippines can overcome the challenge with enough international exposure.
