True genius knows no borders, only the pull of a place embraced as home. Last August, the Senate Hall of the National Museum of Fine Arts welcomed the opening of Sansó: Pusong Pilipino, an exhibition celebrating the seven-decade creative journey of the late Spanish-born artist Juvenal Sansó and his enduring bond with the Philippines. Curated by Fundación Sansó director Ricky Francisco, the exhibition brings together nearly 100 works that trace the artist’s development and his profound attachment to his adopted country.

The opening’s emotional center was the formal turnover of donated works, affirming their place in the nation’s cultural patrimony. National Museum director-general Jeremy Barns, board of trustees chairman Andoni Aboitiz, Fundación Sansó chairman Jack Teotico, and assistant director Tenie Santos led the ceremony, reflecting on an artist whose life and practice became deeply rooted in the archipelago.

Artists, collectors, cultural patrons and guests in contemporary and reimagined Filipiniana filled the galleries as they encountered a body of work spanning seven decades. The exhibition moves from the haunting, melancholic images of Sansó’s student years at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts to the vivid lyricism of his mature work, alongside his textile and costume designs.

The retrospective offers a powerful reflection on belonging. Sansó’s legacy suggests that home is shaped not only by birthplace or blood, but also by memory, devotion and the work of a lifetime. Through art, he forged an enduring allegiance to the Philippines — and left a body of work that has become part of the nation’s own cultural story.
