The rector of Baclaran Church clarified that no shooting occurred on church grounds last Sunday following the arrest of an armed, intoxicated man who caused a disturbance within the compound.
Fr. Rico John Bilangel, rector of the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, issued the statement to dispel rumors after police arrested the suspect Sunday afternoon.
“It is important to clarify that no shooting took place during the incident,” Bilangel said. “Our security personnel and authorities responded quickly, and the individual is now in police custody.”
Bilangel disclosed that two people suffered minor injuries during the commotion, adding that both received immediate medical attention.
Addressing the public, the priest urged churchgoers and social media users to stop sharing unverified reports regarding the disturbance.
“We ask for understanding and cooperation from everyone,” Bilangel said. “We also urge the public to avoid spreading unverified information to prevent confusion and fear.”
The rector assured the public that the church administration maintains strict security protocols to guarantee the safety of devotees and visitors.
