Money moves faster
Digital payments provide one of the clearest measures of the country's technological shift.
Electronic transactions accounted for 57.4 percent of Philippine retail payment volume in 2024, compared with just 1 percent in 2013, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. By value, 59 percent of retail payments were digital.
That growth changes more than the way consumers pay for coffee or transfer money to relatives. Digital payment infrastructure supports e-commerce, remittances, business settlements and government transactions, placing speed and interoperability at the center of financial services.
Banks and financial technology companies are also pushing deeper into automation and artificial intelligence. AI can process large volumes of information quickly, opening applications in fraud detection, credit assessment, customer service and internal operations.
The government's own strategy reflects that direction. The National AI Strategy Roadmap 2.0 identifies data, workforce skills, research, governance and responsible adoption as priorities for developing the country's AI ecosystem.
The Department of Trade and Industry's Center for AI Research was also established to develop local applications, with healthcare among its initial areas of work.
Innovation needs guardrails
Every new digital connection creates another point that can be attacked.
For financial institutions, a faster transaction means little if criminals can intercept it or customers lose confidence in the system. Cybersecurity has therefore become part of the infrastructure of modern finance rather than a back-office concern.
The BSP's Financial Services Cyber Resilience Plan for 2024 to 2029 seeks to strengthen defenses across supervised financial institutions while improving coordination among banks, government agencies and private-sector participants. The central bank has warned that cybercriminals are refining their methods as financial services become increasingly digital.
Regulators are adapting their own tools as well.
The Securities and Exchange Commission introduced SEC Veritas in July for blockchain-based digital signing and authentication of SEC-related documents. Its Strategic Sandbox, established under Memorandum Circular 9, allows companies to test innovative financial products in a controlled live environment while the regulator monitors risks and investor safeguards.
The sandbox requires measures covering consumer protection, cybersecurity, data protection, anti-money laundering controls and risk disclosure. The approach reflects the balance regulators increasingly have to strike: allow useful technology to develop without leaving consumers to absorb the risks.
Technology enters the hospital
The same pressure to improve speed and precision is reshaping healthcare.
East Avenue Medical Center this year opened bidding for a P196-million project covering a robotic surgical system, associated equipment, facility development and multispecialty simulation training for its planned Center for Robotic Surgery.
Robotic systems represent one visible part of a much larger technological shift. Hospitals are adopting more capable imaging equipment, digital records, automated laboratories, remote monitoring and software-assisted clinical tools.
For a country where geography often determines access to specialists, the potential is significant. Digital systems can move information faster between facilities. Telemedicine can extend consultations beyond major cities. Better diagnostic equipment can shorten the distance between symptoms and treatment.
But sophisticated machines cannot compensate for weak systems on their own. Hospitals still need trained professionals, reliable infrastructure, secure patient information and funding that allows technology to reach patients rather than remain confined to a few institutions.
One technological economy
Finance and healthcare may appear to solve very different problems, yet their digital transformation increasingly depends on the same foundations.
Both require secure data. Both need dependable connectivity. Both are experimenting with AI to make sense of information at a scale humans cannot process as quickly. Both must earn trust because failures can carry serious consequences, whether the loss involves savings or health.
That puts technology companies, banks, hospitals and regulators in a common race: turn rapidly improving tools into services people can actually use.
The winners will not necessarily be those deploying the most complicated technology. Value will come from solving ordinary problems better: transferring money safely, spotting fraud earlier, shortening a diagnosis, widening access to care or giving businesses tools once reserved for larger institutions.
The Philippines already has many of the pieces. Digital payments have reached the mainstream. Regulators are testing frameworks for emerging financial products. AI development has entered national policy. Public hospitals are investing in advanced medical systems.
The work now lies in connecting those advances to people.
