ERBIL (AFP) — Iraq will investigate a drone attack on the office of Iraqi Kurdistan’s prime minister and the home of the region’s intelligence chief, authorities said Monday, as Iran rejected accusations it was behind the strikes.
Kurdish authorities said two Iranian drones targeted the sites in the autonomous region’s capital, Erbil, but reported no casualties.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered an investigation to determine the source and launch points of the attack.
Iranian officials condemned the incident and warned it could be a “false-flag” operation aimed at damaging ties between Tehran and Baghdad.
“Nothing justifies the reckless attack on PM Barzani’s office. Kurdish friends should be vigilant against false-flag ploys to sow discord between neighbors,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X.
US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Iraq, Tom Barrack, also condemned the attack, calling it a threat to regional stability.
The Kurdistan region, which hosts US troops, foreign oil companies and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, has faced more than 1,000 attacks by Iran and Iran-backed groups since the start of the Middle East war.
Separately, an explosion at a petroleum products depot in eastern Kurdistan injured 18 people, Kurdish media reported. The cause was not immediately known.
