Nicole Gan kept her nerve down the stretch, draining a testy 10-footer for par on the 18th hole to cap an even-par 72 — the best round among the five Filipinos who competed in the just-concluded Yonex International Junior Championship at Yonex Country Club in Nagaoka, Niigata, Japan on Friday.

It was a sweet redemption for the 14-year-old Immaculate Conception Academy standout, who opened with rounds of 82 and 79 before putting together her best round of the week.

Brittany Pauline Tamayo also saved her best for last, firing a 75 after rounds of 78 and 83. Gab Lapuz, competing in the boys’ division, carded a 79, while Chloe Ang shot 81 and Bea Lapuz closed with an 82 as all five Filipinos finished strongly.

The scores may not have been what the young Filipinos had hoped for, but the campaign offered something far more valuable — a first-hand lesson in competing under demanding conditions against some of Asia’s best junior golfers.

Strong, swirling winds and a challenging Yonex Country Club layout tested the players’ shot-making, patience and composure throughout the tournament.

For the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP), the trip was about more than the leaderboard. It was an opportunity to expose its rising talents to the demands of overseas competition and give them a clear benchmark for their development.

“The experience gained in Japan will be an important part of their growth,” JGFP president Oliver Gan said, noting the players’ significant improvement in the final round.

The tournament forced the young golfers to adapt to unfamiliar conditions, manage pressure and remain composed when their games were put under strain.

The difficult week also gave them a better understanding of the areas they need to work on while showing that they can rise to the challenge when conditions are tough.
