Western Visayas pushes resilient, future-ready infrastructure

Government leaders, engineers, industry experts, and development partners gathered in Iloilo City for Infrastructure Forum 2026 to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening resilient and future-ready infrastructure across Western Visayas.

The forum, held at Diversion 21 Hotel, was organized by the Regional Development Council (RDC) VI Infrastructure Development Committee in partnership with the Rotary Club of Iloilo South, R.I. District 3850.

RDC VI Chairperson and Aklan Governor Jose Enrique M. Miraflores welcomed participants, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in building infrastructure that can withstand natural hazards while supporting the region's long-term growth and development.

Among the key topics discussed were the adoption of resilient infrastructure standards, structural safety measures, and nature-based solutions to ensure that public infrastructure remains safe, sustainable, and responsive to the impacts of climate change and disasters.

One of the resource speakers, Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) President Engr. Ademar Pama, underscored the need to consider multiple risk factors in infrastructure planning and construction.

He said these include environmental hazards, human-induced risks, poor planning, design deficiencies, substandard construction materials, and natural disasters that could compromise the integrity and lifespan of infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, Integrated Institute of Electrical Engineers (IIEE) Metro North Chapter President Engr. Abee Jule Torres stressed the importance of involving specialists from various engineering disciplines in infrastructure development.

According to Torres, projects should integrate expertise not only in structural engineering but also in electrical systems and other technical fields to ensure the safety, efficiency, and long-term functionality of infrastructure.

Carrying the theme, "Advancing Standards, Nature-based Solutions, and Innovations for Future-ready Infrastructure," the forum brought together representatives from government agencies, local government units, the academe, research institutions, professional organizations, and the private sector to promote innovative and resilient infrastructure development in Western Visayas.
