National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag is eyeing to complete the investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the country's hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games within three to four weeks.
Matibag said, “We are intending to wrap it up in three to four weeks lang kasi malinaw naman yung ebidensya.”
The NBI launched its formal probe into an estimated ₱10 billion in unliquidated funds and alleged procurement anomalies related to the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games after visiting New Clark City to inspect a site for a new NBI Academy.
The probe covers alleged anomalies involving projects related to the 2019 SEA Games, including the New Clark City sports complex and the controversial SEA Games cauldron.
NBI officials noticed the sports complex during their site visit to New Clark City and received reports of massive unliquidated expenditures, prompting the creation of a specialized team composed of the Financial Investigation Unit and the Special Action Unit to audit fund flows.
Investigators are looking into whether a private foreign contractor built the complex through congressional budget insertions without competitive public bidding.
The probe also covers the financial documentation and cost justification of the controversial ₱50-million Olympic-style cauldron used during the 2019 opening ceremonies.
The NBI has formally requested related audit reports and documents from the Commission on Audit and the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding past transactions involving the Philippine Sports Commission and PHISGOC.
Matibag said the bureau is reviewing documents and other evidence related to the transactions to determine whether any violations were committed and who may be held accountable.
