  • More than 350 delegates from 12 nations are set to compete in the 10th Senior Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships at the Tagaytay City Velodrome next month.

Host Philippines will be joined by powerhouse Vietnam, Japan, Korea, India, Mongolia, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, and Thailand in the 4 to 7 August meet organized by the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) and presented by the Philippine Sports Commission.

India has the most number of entries with 50, followed by Vietnam with 45, and the Philippines 43 as they see action in individual men and women’s events, mixed pairs, trios, groups, aerobic dance, and aerobic steps.

The four-day event features age groups in the 12-14 youth, 15-17 junior, and 18 above for seniors.

“We have wanted to stage this event for some time and we are proud to say that we finally have it,” said GAP president Cynthia Carrion in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Tuesday at the Philippine Sports Commission media room.

“Aerobics is not only an exercise. It is also a competition.”

Carrion was joined by GAP secretary-general Rowena Eusuya in the session presented by San Miguel Corporation, PSC, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.

The gymnastics chief refused to predict how the country will fare in the meet sanctioned by the World Gymnastics and Asian Gymnastics Union.

“I cannot promise anything kasi ang gagaling nung ibang countries,” said Carrion, but added the mixed pair of Arcenio Cadios and Charmaine Dolar are medal contenders for the host country after winning the silver medal in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok last year.
