  • Agents from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) raided an illegal gambling operation disguised as a video game arcade in Makati City, arresting 26 foreign nationals caught playing inside.

The NBI’s Dangerous Drugs Division executed the raid on the amusement center, taking 25 Japanese nationals and one Taiwanese national into custody.

Investigators said the parlor operated a cash-payout scheme designed to look like a legitimate redemption arcade.

Patrons bought card credits to play games and earn points, which could then be redeemed at a counter for minor items like pens and umbrellas.

The counter also displayed high-end electronic gadgets in sealed boxes on shelves. However, players who won enough points for those high-value prizes were directed to a third-floor room where the items were allegedly exchanged directly for cash.

A closer inspection revealed that the gadget boxes — including those for mobile phones — were empty, proving the arcade was merely a front for illegal gambling, officials said.

“Players buy a card, then use that card to play. You earn points here. Once you get points, you go to a counter to claim a prize,” NBI Director Melvin Matibag said.

Authorities said masking the establishment as a family amusement arcade allowed the business to evade the higher taxes levied on licensed casinos.
