  • The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has temporarily suspended the participation of Special Operations Group-Task Force Road Clearing head Gabriel Go in road-clearing operations while it investigates complaints over a viral video showing his apprehension of a public school teacher who was riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the MMDA said Go's involvement in clearing operations "is currently held in abeyance pending the result of the investigation."

The agency said it had also issued Go a show-cause order directing him to explain in writing his actions during the incident after receiving complaints from various groups.

"The viral video of an incident involving our personnel Gabriel Go was brought to our attention, and we have also received letters from various groups," the MMDA said, assuring the public that an investigation was underway to determine any administrative liability.

The controversy stemmed from a video posted on Go's personal Facebook account showing him stopping a male teacher for driving a motorcycle without a crash helmet, a traffic violation punishable under the RA No. 10054 or the Motorcycle Helmet Act.

In the video, Go was heard telling the motorist: "Teacher ka tapos wala kang helmet? Paano natin tuturuan ang ating mga estudyante kung ganyan?"

The teacher immediately apologized and pleaded with Go not to upload the footage online.

Go replied that the teacher's face had been blurred and told him not to identify himself publicly. The teacher was still issued a citation ticket for the helmet violation.

The video quickly spread on social media, drawing criticism over the public shaming of the teacher and Go's continued posting of enforcement operations on his personal social media accounts.

The ACT Teachers Party-list called on MMDA Chairman Don Artes to remove Go from his post, accusing him of repeatedly violating the agency's own policy on personal social media posts involving official operations.

"Malinaw na vinivideohan at pinopost ni Gabriel Go sa kanyang personal account ang MMDA operations para sa kanyang sariling interes," the group said, arguing that the videos appeared to prioritize personal publicity over public service.

Go had not publicly commented on the controversy as of press time.
