Ateneo de Manila University has been given a nine-day extension by the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) to submit its official findings on the tragic incident last month that claimed the lives of two members of its men’s basketball squad in a team-building activity in Aurora.
The UAAP has granted the school’s request to push back the submission deadline from 15 July to 24 July, according to a statement released by the league on Tuesday evening.
Ateneo requested the extension before the original deadline to complete its internal investigation and submit its report on the deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili in a drowning incident on 8 June in Dipaculao in Aurora.
The two student-athletes perished after being swept away to deep waters by a strong rip current while undergoing a team-building activity.
Despite the extension, the preventive measures and sanctions imposed by the UAAP against members of the Blue Eagles coaching staff present during that fateful day will remain in effect.
The league has banned former head coach Tab Baldwin and seven others from any UAAP-related activities.
“All previously announced preventive measures remain in effect during the extension period, including the barring of the concerned members of the Ateneo coaching staff from all UAAP-related activities,” the UAAP said.
Also barred from the league are Ateneo assistant coaches Sandro Soriano, Dean Castano, Jon Jacinto and Buboy Domingo, strength and conditioning coach CJ Elumba, and physical therapist Jerick Rueca.
Authorities have also recommended to the Department of Justice the filing of homicide-related charges against Baldwin and his staff, including another strength and conditioning coach New Zealand national Grant Dearns.
Charges of negligence resulting in homicide have also been recommended against Ateneo athletic director Em Fernandez, Hermanos Leisure & Agri-Farm Resort owners Francisco and Fredrick Zubia, and resort manager Yedda Rubio.
Facilities officer and Ateneo men’s volleyball team coach Vince Mangulabnan has been removed from the initial list of respondents as authorities determined his participation as limited to logistical arrangements.
The UAAP assured that the extension will not affect the on-going investigations conducted by the government, Ateneo and the league’s fact-finding bodies.
“Any determination of accountability will be based on the findings of the appropriate government agencies, Ateneo’s independent fact-finding body, and the UAAP, in accordance with the UAAP By-Laws and applicable rules and regulations,” the league said.
The Blue Eagles are currently under interim coach Louie Alas.
