A robbery suspect was killed and another was wounded Monday night following a police pursuit and shootout in Barangay Bangkal, Makati City, local authorities said.
The incident prompted praise from Makati City Mayor Nancy Binay, who commended the local police force for its rapid response to the armed robbery.
Operatives from the Makati Police Intelligence Section responded to a victim’s call for assistance near a hotel on Apolinario Street at approximately 10:20 p.m. When officers arrived, two armed suspects fled on a motorcycle, prompting a hot pursuit.
During the chase, the suspects fired at the pursuing officers, who returned fire. The motorcycle eventually crashed at the corner of Apolinario and Tinio streets.
One suspect, identified by police as “Kenneth,” was wounded and arrested. The other suspect, identified by the alias “Onyok,” was taken to St. Clare’s Medical Center, where he was declared dead on arrival.
At the scene, investigators recovered a black Honda Beat motorcycle, two firearms with ammunition, a sling bag containing an MK2 fragmentation grenade, cellphones and stolen jewelry valued at approximately P25,000.
Police said the two suspects are linked to a series of crimes in Makati and neighboring cities.
Authorities are preparing charges of robbery, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and illegal possession of explosives against the surviving suspect.
“We want our city to be peaceful and safe,” Binay said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful to the Makati police for your bravery, quick action and tireless service to our community.”
Makati Police chief Col. Pedro Alagano assured residents, workers and tourists that the local police department will continue working to keep the city safe, while Binay urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities.
