The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday postponed its National Safe Schools Summit and nationwide safety drill to ensure the safety of students amid widespread class suspensions caused by severe weather in the capital.
This comes as the country braces for the impacts of typhoon “Inday,” internationally known as “Bavi,” which has enhanced the seasonal southwest monsoon and brought heavy rains across Luzon.
The safety drills were originally scheduled to take place at Manila Science High School as part of the department’s initiative to strengthen security protocols against on-campus threats.
“This is in view of the suspension of face-to-face classes in Manila due to inclement weather, pursuant to the advisory of the City Government of Manila based on the recommendation of the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department,” the DepEd said in an advisory.
“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our school community,” the agency added.
Officials said a new date for the summit and safety drills will be announced through the department’s official communication channels.
