Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday called for legislation banning social media platforms from allowing minors to register on them, placing the responsibility for enforcing age restrictions on technology companies rather than the children.
Her call came a day after the shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School that left two students dead, including the alleged gunman.
“If we make a law, we should prohibit platforms from allowing minors to register,” Duterte told reporters in an interview in Zamboanga City where she had flown to sympathize with the affected students.
Duterte said the government should regulate social media companies directly rather than impose restrictions on individual minors.
The House of Representatives is currently considering multiple bills on the issue. One proposal seeks to bar minors below 18 from creating and maintaining accounts on age-restricted social media platforms, while others set minimum age limits at 13, 15 and 16.
A separate Senate measure filed in April seeks to prohibit children below 16 from registering on or maintaining social media accounts. It would also require platforms to implement age and identity verification protocols.
The House leadership has also proposed fines of up to P50 million for platforms that fail to comply with child online safety requirements, including age verification and parental controls.
