President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed BJMP Deputy Chief for Operations Chief Supt. Efren Nemeño as the new chief of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), replacing the retiring Chief Supt. Ruel Rivera.
A Palace appointment dated 1 July and obtained by DAILY TRIBUNE confirmed Nemeño's designation.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla also confirmed the appointment, saying Nemeño will take his oath on 9 July.
Rivera, who was originally scheduled to retire on 5 January 2026, was granted a one-year extension by Remulla but opted to shorten it by six months.
Nemeño assumes leadership of the BJMP as the bureau oversees the detention of several high-profile personalities facing graft and corruption charges.
