There comes a point in adulthood when you expect to outgrow certain things. Favorite bands become nostalgic playlists. Posters disappear from bedroom walls. The excitement fades. But that isn’t the case for me about EXO.
Somewhere between lectures and sleepless nights, six-minute music videos of EXO and their growing playlist became my escape.
Fourteen years after their debut in 2012, EXO’s legacy extends far beyond album sales or sold-out arenas. They helped redefine what K-pop could be by blending intricate choreography, soaring vocals and ambitious concepts into a sound that influenced an entire generation. Songs such as “Growl,” “Call Me Baby,” “Monster” and “Love Shot” did more than top the charts — they became cultural milestones that introduced countless listeners around the world to Korean pop music.
Their journey, however, has never been without turbulence. Departures of some members rocked the fandom. They started out with 12 members, then became nine, turned seven and now five.
That resilience is reflected in their music. From the youthful confidence of XOXO to the polished experimentation of EXODUS, the tropical grooves of The War, the sophistication of Don’t Mess Up My Tempo and the darker themes explored in Obsession, EXO has never been content with repeating itself. Earlier this year, the release of REVERXE proved that even after more than a decade, the group continues to evolve while staying true to the vocal excellence and performance quality that built its reputation.
Perhaps that is why EXO still matters after 14 years. That legacy was on full display on 4 and 5 July, when thousands of Filipino EXO-Ls filled the SM Mall of Asia Arena for the Manila stop of the group’s EXO PLANET #6 – EXhOrizon tour. The career-spanning concert celebrated EXO’s enduring legacy through a setlist packed with chart-topping hits, beloved B-sides and emotional performances.

The second night opened with explosive performances of “MAMA,” “Monster” and “Overdose” before moving through fan favorites including “Moonlight Shadow,” “Gravity,” “Jekyll,” “The Eve,” “Love Shot,” “Power,” “Tempo,” “Ko Ko Bop,” “Call Me Baby” and “Growl.” Fans were also treated to a special duet of “Baby Don’t Cry” by Suho and D.O., along with beloved B-sides such as “Walk on Memories,” “Don’t Go,” “El Dorado,” “Forever,” “Paradise” and “Angel.”
The nearly three-hour production featured multiple VCR segments, elaborate costume changes and a medley of EXO’s biggest title tracks, striking a balance between nostalgia and the group’s newer material.
Throughout the evening, Suho, Chanyeol, Kai, Sehun and D.O. expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support of Filipino EXO-Ls, noting that it had been seven years since EXO last performed in the Philippines as a group during the EXplOration tour at the same venue.
Earlier this year, EXO made its long-awaited comeback with the release of its seventh full-length album, REVERXE, on 19 January. Featuring Suho, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, Sehun and Lay, the nine-track record marks the group’s return to its signature SM Performance (SMP) sound. Led by the title track “Crown,” the album also includes “Back It Up,” “Crazy,” “Moonlight Shadow,” “Back Pocket” and the fan-dedicated closing track, “I’m Home.”
Fourteen years after their debut, EXO continues to prove that longevity is not simply about staying together — it’s about remaining meaningful. For those who grew up with their music, every reunion is more than just another concert. It is a reminder that while time moves forward, some songs, memories and connections never truly fade.
