Batac City Mayor Markee Chua has assured full support for vendors affected by the Batac Public Market fire, as the local government conducts damage assessment, mobilizes aid, and pledges to rebuild a safer, stronger marketplace for the community.
Batac City Mayor Markee Chua has assured affected vendors of the city government's full support following the fire that gutted the Batac Public Market, saying assistance efforts are now underway as authorities assess the extent of the damage.
In an official statement issued Sunday, Chua said the fire was declared "fire out" at around 6 a.m., bringing to an end hours of firefighting operations.
"This is a very painful day for our city, especially for our market vendors who have lost their livelihood," Chua said, extending the city government's deepest sympathies to all those affected by the incident.
The mayor said he remained at the scene from the onset of the incident to closely monitor the situation and ensure that the necessary response and assistance were immediately provided. He was joined by Vice Mayor Albert D. Chua and members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
Chua also expressed his appreciation to officials who personally went to the Batac Public Market to extend their support during the incident. These included Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta Marcos, Vice Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc, Board Member Rafael Medina, Currimao Mayor Michael "Boyet" Quilala and Vice Mayor Judith Quilala, as well as Laoag City Mayor BrYan Alcid and Vice Mayor Carlos Fariñas.
The mayor likewise thanked firefighters and volunteers from various local government units across Ilocos Norte, recognizing their dedication and sacrifice in battling the blaze throughout the night.
"Your sacrifice, courage, and tireless efforts throughout the night helped prevent a greater tragedy. We will always be grateful for your service," Chua said.
According to the mayor, the city government is now conducting a damage assessment while mobilizing all available resources to provide assistance to affected vendors.
"The City Government of Batac stands with you in this difficult time," he said, assuring vendors that the local government is committed to helping them recover and restore their livelihoods as soon as possible.
Chua added that the city government remains committed to rebuilding the Batac Public Market into a better, safer, and stronger facility.
He also appealed to the public to avoid the public market area for the time being, warning that lingering smoke may still pose health risks. Clearing and cleanup operations will begin once the Bureau of Fire Protection gives the go signal.
The mayor concluded his statement by expressing hope that the city would recover from the tragedy through unity and continued cooperation among residents, government agencies, and partner local government units.
