Marikina City's dredging operations received a boost after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) turned over a new amphibious dredger to the local government unit on Tuesday, 30 June.
Mayor Marjorie Ann "Maan" Teodoro personally inspected the new dredging machine and its operation along Marikina River which will augment the city’s existing dredging equipment, and accelerate dredging operations as part of the city’s integrated flood control strategy.
The city government expressed gratitude to the DPWH for helping Marikina City in its ongoing and extensive dredging operations.
Teodoro said these dredging operations have helped to prevent heavy flooding in the city, protecting many families and communities, especially those near the river.
The city has invested in specialized equipment, including amphibious excavators, to sustain dredging and river maintenance activities as part of its broader flood control strategy.
Beyond deepening the river, these efforts are designed to facilitate the faster movement of water during periods of heavy rainfall.
While no flood mitigation program can completely eliminate the risks posed by extreme weather events, Marikina remains focused on enhancing resilience, protecting lives and properties, and ensuring that communities are better prepared for the challenges brought about by the rainy season and other climate-related hazards.
Prior to the inspection, Teodoro led a pre-disaster risk assessment meeting with the Marikina Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, local police and firefighters, Schools Division Office, and other concerned offices and departments of the city government to ensure resources and assets are prepared.
Effective flood management requires close coordination among local and national government agencies.
Through a whole-of-government approach, the city government of Marikina continues to work with partner agencies to ensure that flood control projects, water management measures, and disaster preparedness initiatives are properly integrated and implemented.
Over the years, the city government has invested in long-term flood control measures, including the improvement of drainage infrastructure, regular maintenance of waterways, and the continuous dredging of the Marikina River.
These initiatives are aimed at increasing the river’s carrying capacity, improving water flow, and reducing flood risks in vulnerable areas.
Teodoro ordered the regular declogging and clearing of the city’s drainage systems and waterways, especially throughout the rainy season.
To ease these clearing efforts, she reminded residents to refrain from throwing garbage in the city’s river, creeks and other waterways, and practice proper waste segregation and disposal.
Teodoro also instructed the concerned departments to prepare the city's 36 evacuation centers, ensuring basic necessities are adequately supplied, and community kitchens are fully equipped.
The local chief executive likewise urged residents to be vigiliant in case of emergencies, keep up to date with official advisories from the city government, closely monitor the river's water level, and cooperate with local authorities.
