Beginnings
I began my career as a fashion ramp and photography model at the age of 18. In 1989, I launched my first concept store, The Black Shop. This was followed by Mix, a multi-brand retail destination that carried international labels such as Issey Miyake, Anya Hindmarch, Helmut Lang, Ann Demeulemeester, Anna Sui and many others.
We also opened a Jeans Bar, which featured some of the most sought-after denim and casual wear brands from the United States and Europe.
In 2006, I launched my eponymous brand Celestina Maynila in Barneys New York and came after were 50 high-end fashion store and specialty boutiques in Europe, America and Asia.
Challenges
In the pre-internet era, one of the greatest challenges was introducing brands in the Philippines that were outside mainstream fashion. When we brought in designers such as Ann Demeulemeester and Helmut Lang — both pioneers of minimalism at the time — we had to educate Filipino consumers on why exceptional materials, precise tailoring and superior craftsmanship mattered.
Minimalism was often misunderstood because it lacked embellishments, colors and obvious luxury cues like logos. We helped shoppers appreciate how impeccable fit, proportion, construction and fabric quality could speak louder than decorative details. It was an opportunity to teach the distinction between style that follows trends and taste that transcends them.
Where I am now
Today, I am exploring new opportunities to learn and grow in the worlds of art and interiors. For many years, I set aside my passion for interior styling, although I continued helping friends transform and refresh their living rooms, dining areas, libraries and personal spaces — including my own home.
I recently decided to pursue this interest more formally and am currently studying Interior Styling and Decorating at SOFA School of Design. I am especially grateful to friends who, despite valuing their privacy, have allowed me to professionally photograph the spaces I have styled for them. These projects are helping me build a portfolio, which I consider a true treasure and an exciting new chapter in my creative journey.
