The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) have coordinated security preparations ahead of rallies scheduled for 25 February to mark the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, a justice official said Tuesday.
DOJ spokesperson Polo Martinez said the meeting focused on maintaining peace and order during the commemorative activities, particularly with several groups announcing protest actions.
Martinez said the PNP and DOJ discussed police deployment plans, including the positioning of officers and identification of areas that require close monitoring.
“The DOJ, through its prosecutors, will be on standby to assist law enforcement for the conduct ofan inquest, if necessary,” Martinez said in a message to reporters.
He explained that inquest proceedings are conducted to determine the legality of warrantless arrests, should any be made during the rallies.
Several groups have announced plans to hold a third iteration of the Trillion Peso March on Wednesday, calling for accountability over alleged corruption in government and opposing political dynasties.
The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) earlier said it would enforce a “no permit, no rally” policy during the anniversary.
However, the Koalisyon Makabayan has maintained that it will proceed with its planned protest along EDSA with or without a permit.
The NCRPO said it would deploy 14,000 police personnel across Metro Manila to ensure public safety and manage crowds during the anniversary events.
