Davao City—Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte reminded Dabawenyos that the Davao River Bucana Bridge serves as a reminder of the city’s good relationship with China.
“As we stand on this bridge tonight, we should remember that China handed this to us for free. This stands as a symbol of our good relationship with China,” Duterte said in his speech Monday night, 16 February, during the city’s Chinese New Year celebration at the Davao River Bucana Bridge.
Duterte also urged the present government to communicate with China in a peaceful manner, saying it would benefit both sides.
“Davao is a melting pot of different cultures. We have the locals, the tribes, and the Chinese community. We have more friends than enemies. That proves our strength in our diversity,” Duterte said.
After his speech, Duterte formally led the official lighting ceremony of the Davao River Bucana Bridge, followed by dragon dances and performances of Chinese songs and dances.
