Pedestrians along Urbano Velasco Avenue in Barangay Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City are being forced to walk alongside moving vehicles due to sidewalk obstructions, sparking safety concerns among local residents.
Piles of uncollected garbage and a small structure, which neighbors allege was built illegally at the end of the road, have rendered a section of the sidewalk nearly unusable.
Residents reported that the lack of walking space is particularly dangerous during rush hours, when foot traffic is pushed into the path of vehicles.
Local critics cited the situation as a failure of maintenance and a lack of enforcement regarding city ordinances.
Also, residents have called on the local government and Mayor Vico Sotto to clear the obstructions and restore safe passage for the community.
In a separate move to address pedestrian safety, Pasig City officials announced they have begun reinforcing and repairing bollards along pedestrian lanes throughout the city.
The initiative follows public complaints regarding the durability of existing barriers.
Meantime, City personnel conducted inspections and immediate repairs to address structural weaknesses in the bollards, which are designed to separate foot traffic from motorized vehicles on congested roads.
The local government stated it will implement a regular monitoring schedule to ensure the bollards remain effective for long-term use.
