Margot Robbie brought old Hollywood glamour and Gothic romance to life at the world premiere of Wuthering Heights in Los Angeles on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, wearing a £6 million Cartier necklace once owned by Elizabeth Taylor.

The Australian actress, who stars as Cathy Earnshaw in the film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, wore the heart-shaped Taj Mahal diamond set in gold and jade, hanging from a gold, ruby, and diamond chain. The piece was a gift from Taylor’s fifth husband, Richard Burton, for her 40th birthday in 1972. Robbie described the necklace as carrying “a lot of romantic history.” She said: “It’s our big Hollywood world premiere. We’ve got to go all out. This is Elizabeth Taylor’s necklace. It’s the Taj Mahal diamond that Richard Burton gave to her. There’s something kind of Cathy and Heathcliff about Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in my mind, so it felt appropriate.”

The Taj Mahal diamond has a story as rich and dramatic as the film itself. Originally commissioned by a 17th-century Mughal emperor for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the jewel was passed down to their son, Shah Jahan, who later gifted it to his own beloved wife. Four years after her death, Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal mausoleum as a monument to her love, immortalizing their romance in marble. The diamond was later acquired by Cartier, who crafted the current chain of gold and ruby, and Richard Burton secretly purchased it to surprise Elizabeth Taylor, creating one of Hollywood’s most legendary love stories. After Taylor’s death in 2011, the piece sold at auction for £6 million to an anonymous buyer, returning now to the spotlight on Robbie.

Robbie’s ensemble evoked the Gothic intensity of Wuthering Heights. She wore a custom Schiaparelli gown featuring a nude lace bodice that faded into a black-and-red train resembling flower petals, creating a sense of passion, darkness, and drama reminiscent of Cathy and Heathcliff’s tumultuous love. She completed the look with custom 38-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings and a Fred Leighton ring, echoing the ornate decadence of the period.

The film, directed by Emerald Fennell, explores the dark, obsessive, and destructive romance between childhood friends Catherine and Heathcliff, whose love is thwarted by social class and circumstance. Robbie and her co-star Jacob Elordi, who plays Heathcliff, reflected on their own behind-the-scenes moments while preparing for the film. On Valentine’s Day, Elordi filled Robbie’s room with roses, prompting her to say: “We were shooting on Valentine’s Day. You made my day and, as Heathcliff, filled my room with roses.”

The premiere was a fitting stage for both Robbie’s homage to cinematic romance and the timeless intensity of Wuthering Heights. As the film blends Gothic atmosphere, passionate obsession, and visual opulence, Robbie’s choice to wear the Taj Mahal diamond seemed almost predestined, a reminder of love’s enduring power, both in history and on screen.

Wuthering Heights opens in theaters on 13 February 2026.
