Nartatez vows crime reduction as he assumes full PNP leadership

Officially installed as chief of the Philippine National Police, Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Wednesday vowed to sustain reforms and expand police programs aimed at keeping communities safe and reducing crime.

In a chance interview with reporters at Camp Crame, Nartatez said the President’s directive was clear: ensure public safety and continue efforts to reduce crime nationwide.

“The directive of our President is to continue the work of the Philippine National Police, ensure that the community is safe, and make sure that crime goes down,” Nartatez said in Filipino, adding that these efforts have long been ongoing and will remain in place.

Asked how he felt about his formal assumption as PNP chief, Nartatez said the responsibility of leading the police force had already been on his shoulders since he took his oath as officer in charge on 26 August 2025.

He said his recent promotion to four-star general merely formalized his role, following a promotion order issued by the President and endorsed by the National Police Commission.

On whether there would be new directives under his leadership, Nartatez said there would be no major policy shifts, stressing continuity in the PNP’s peace and order programs.

“What I said on August 26 remains the same. The programs of the Philippine National Police to improve peace and order will continue,” he said.

Nartatez also addressed possible reshuffles within the police organization, noting that personnel movements are routine due to retirements and promotions.

“From time to time, many retire and many are promoted, so there is a chain reaction. There are movements every time,” he said.

The PNP chief described crime reduction as a comprehensive effort that depends on the readiness and morale of the organization’s more than 230,000 personnel.

He said effective law enforcement requires a well-equipped, well-trained and motivated police force.

Nartatez cited improved salaries, continuous training, sufficient funding and modern equipment as key factors in boosting police performance.

He also underscored the importance of strong coordination with stakeholders, particularly local communities.

“With partnership and participation, particularly from the community, we can reduce crime and enforce the law,” Nartatez said.

“This is a unique organization. Officers come and go,” Nartatez said when asked about the status of his predecessor, Gen. Nicholas Torre III, adding that leadership transitions are a normal part of the police organization.

Nartatez reiterated his commitment to leading a disciplined, professional and community-oriented police force focused on public safety and the rule of law.
