The SM City Olongapo Central has recorded annual energy savings of 2,063,464 kWh.
According to the Department of Energy (DOE), the five-year-old mall situated inside Olongapo City has set a benchmark in energy-efficient building operations within SM Prime Holdings.
"Through initiatives such as a solar photovoltaic system, EIFS insulation, ACVS enhancements, variable frequency drives, chiller setpoint adjustments, and natural daylighting, the mall achieved annual energy savings of 2,063,464 kWh," the DOE cited.
The government agency also said that the mall has reduced its carbon emissions by 1,481.77 tCO₂.
"Complementing these technical upgrades are energy optimization projects, digital management systems like BMS and CMMS, and sustainability programs including Earth Hour, Trash to Cash, and e-waste collection," DOE stated.
The mall also offers electric vehicle charging stations and genset noise reduction measures.
"Backed by SM Prime’s SPEEDD program to strengthen engineering expertise, SM City Olongapo Central demonstrates how large commercial buildings can combine innovation, operational excellence, and holistic sustainability to make a meaningful environmental impact," the agency said.
Green malls such as SM City Olongapo Central are shopping centers designed and operated with a focus on minimizing environmental impact through sustainable practices, architectural features, and technology.
These malls often incorporate features like renewable energy, efficient waste management, and green spaces.
SM City malls are implementing a comprehensive green mall strategy, known as the SM Green Movement, which focuses on energy efficiency, water stewardship, and waste management to embed sustainability across its properties.
