The Philippine National Police (PNP) warned on Friday about the deadly risks posed by illegal firecracker factories after a Christmas Day explosion in Dagupan City killed two people and injured four others.

PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the makeshift facility in Sitio Boquig, Barangay Bacayao Norte, was operating without the necessary permits in a residential area, as confirmed by local authorities and the Regional Civil Security Unit.

“The incident highlights the persistent dangers of illegal firecracker operations. We are deeply saddened that this tragedy occurred on Christmas Day, a time when families should be celebrating safely,” he said.

He emphasized that the PNP has long warned against the manufacture and sale of illegal firecrackers, particularly during the holiday season.

“Unfortunately, this incident shows the deadly consequences when the law is ignored,” he said.

A full investigation into the Dagupan explosion has been ordered to hold those responsible accountable and ensure that perpetrators of the illegal operation face legal action.

Nartatez also issued a stern warning to anyone still involved in illegal firecracker manufacturing or sales.

“We appeal to our kababayan to help us in putting a stop to this illegal and irresponsible practice. Let us work together to keep our family and community safe,” he said.

“To those who continue to manufacture and sell illegal fireworks, this incident should serve as a wake-up call. You are not only violating the law, you are also putting innocent lives at risk,” he added.
