ZAMBOANGA CITY — In a show of trust and unity, residents of Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat, voluntarily handed over 38 firearms and 10 pieces of high-explosive ordnance to the 7th Infantry (Tapat) Battalion last Friday.

Lt. Col. Tristan Rey P. Vallescas, commanding officer of the 7th IB, reported that the surrendered weapons ranged from high-powered rifles to low-powered firearms, including 12-gauge shotguns, 12-gauge pistols, M79 grenade launchers, Springfield .30 rifles, 9mm submachine guns and grenades.

“This is a strong message of choosing peace over violence,” said Brig. Gen. Michael A. Santos, commander of the 603rd Infantry Brigade. “Every weapon removed from the community helps protect innocent lives.”

Maj. Gen. Jose Vladimir R. Cagara of the 6th Infantry “Kampilan” Division called the gesture “a wonderful Christmas gift—a gift of trust, unity, and hope for a safer future.”

The voluntary surrender is part of the government’s ongoing campaign against illegal arms under the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Management Program. It reflects a growing culture of peace in communities across Central Mindanao.

Maj. Gen. Cagara assured residents that the military, in partnership with local government units and other security forces, will continue initiatives to reduce the threat of violence and foster long-term safety and stability in the region.
