President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has urged all public offices to observe austerity measures this holiday season in solidarity with Filipinos affected by recent calamities that battered the country.
“In light of recent natural disasters and calamities in the country, it is necessary to adopt austerity measures during the Christmas season to ensure greater efficiency in public spending, prevent the misuse of government resources, promote a culture of simplicity in the bureaucracy, and support the government's efforts to prioritize essential programs and services,” Memorandum Circular (MC) 110 said.
The circular was issued and signed by Acting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto and took effect on 15 December 2025.
The austerity directive covers national government agencies, government-owned or -controlled corporations, state universities and colleges, and local government units.
The same observance was also implemented in 2024.
Recto said the Marcos administration remains committed to promoting fiscal discipline and the judicious use of government resources, consistent with the country’s socio-economic priorities and ongoing expenditure management reforms.
Heads of agencies were directed to ensure proper implementation and compliance with existing laws, rules, and regulations governing the prudent use of public funds.
