Pangilinan-led PLDT Inc. is calling for immediate and strategic investment in artificial intelligence (AI), citing its potential impact on the country’s economy.

In a statement on Tuesday, 16 December 2025, PLDT and Smart Head of Network Strategy and Architecture Eric Santiago said the Philippines risks missing out on an estimated 8 to 12 percent gross domestic product (GDP) boost by 2030 without sufficient AI talent, infrastructure, and governance. He said gains could come from higher productivity, exports, and services.

“It’s not just about the buzzwords, but about bottom lines and better lives,” Santiago said.

Santiago said strengthening AI talent must start in schools and universities, alongside efforts to attract Filipino experts working abroad.

“We should also encourage and incentivize Filipino AI experts abroad to return and help in training,” he said. “Upskilling our people is essential. AI fluency must be accessible to all so we can build the bench needed for long-term innovation.”

He also stressed the need for strong governance and cybersecurity safeguards.

“Trust is fundamental. A resilient governance framework ensures that every API integration, every connection point, and every AI-enabled system remains safeguarded,” Santiago said, adding that investor confidence and citizen protection depend on these measures.

Santiago said infrastructure remains central to AI adoption. He cited PLDT and Smart’s rollout of a 5G Standalone network, distributed edge capabilities, and resilient connectivity solutions, including laser-based, point-to-multipoint, and satellite technologies.

“We are building networks that stay intelligent and operational despite disruptions, ensuring continuous service,” he said.

He added that industry collaboration could help turn AI into what he described as “archipelago intelligence,” translating technology investments into practical applications across the country.
