Cistern tanks in Cainta, Rizal have proven effective in mitigating flooding—and the local government is now maximizing their use by diverting collected rainwater to irrigate plants.
"I have had many holding tanks built in Cainta. An underground rainwater harvesting tank located beneath the covered courts so it doesn't contribute further to the rising water levels in our waterways when it rains," Mayor Keith Nieto said.
Nieto added that he ordered the collected water to be used for plant irrigation to conserve supply and reduce runoff into drainage systems and waterways.
"Yesterday, we pumped water from the Kasibulan holding tank that we placed underneath their basketball court," he said.
"Our landscaping team collected the rainwater and water the newly planted plants at the center island of Imelda Avenue," the mayor added.
